Domestic Violence

Laadli foundation is committed to fight against social evils still prevalent in Indian society. One of the most prominent social evils against women is Domestic violence, which is typically the violence suffered by a woman by male members of her family or relatives. The offence includes physical violence, emotional abuse, and sexual assault. According to The National family and health survey, total lifetime prevalence of domestic violence was 33.5% among women aged 15-49. A 2014 study reports that although the reported domestic violence rate in India is low, the large population of India means that the violence affects 27.5 million women over their lifetimes.

Laadli foundation organizes awareness campaigns against domestic violence. We talk to women, from both rural and urban areas, about the “Protection of women from domestic violence Act, 2005.” Our panel of experts explains the legal provisions of the legislation, and how the victims can use it to safeguard themselves and seek legal support. We have also observed massive under-reporting of cases of domestic violence from the victims. There is a sense of hesitancy among Indian women who experience domestic violence to report or prosecute against such crimes. Many women who report a case end up getting re-victimized in the process. Our team also provides training to the victims and their kids on what to do when faced with domestic violence and how to ask for help when the act of domestic violence is happening.
